Montana’s Senior Session

If you’re dreaming of a one-of-a-kind western senior photo session that captures natural beauty, rustic charm, and a little edgy flair, Montana’s senior portraits are proof that New Mexico is the perfect place to bring that vision to life.

As a senior photographer in New Mexico, I’m always looking for locations that tell a story — wide open skies, rolling hills, old barns, and winding dirt roads. But when Montana mentioned she wanted to incorporate a Mustang into her session, I knew we’d need a western backdrop that was both unique and car-friendly. Challenge accepted.

I’d heard rumors of an old arena just outside of town, and one day, I convinced my husband to drive by it with me. He insisted it wasn’t going to work — he’d seen it before and wasn’t impressed. But I needed to see it with my own eyes. While we were mid-debate, a little barn came into view. It was tucked just off the road, and somehow, despite passing by it countless times, I had never really seen it.

“That barn!” I blurted out. “That’s the spot! Who owns it?” A rush of questions poured out of me while my husband turned the truck around. As we drove closer, my excitement grew — the barn was even better up close. And the winding road leading to it? Absolutely perfect for Mustang photos.

As if the location wasn’t magical enough, the evening of Montana’s shoot brought moody, overcast skies and the threat of rain. But this is New Mexico — storms roll through fast. I texted Montana and asked if she’d be okay with a few raindrops. She was game, and I promised her the lighting would be worth it. I was right.

We started with the car on that dreamy, winding road and slowly made our way toward the barn. As we set up, we noticed a man working with horses nearby. I didn’t want to interrupt, so we kept our distance, photographing from the road. But then — he started shouting. Friendly shouting! He told us we could get closer. Not only that, but he invited us onto the property and even brought out a horse for Montana to use in her photos.

Montana was stunning — her outfit, her hair and makeup, her confidence in front of the camera. Everything came together: the classic car, the authentic western setting, the perfect light, and the generosity of a kind stranger who made the shoot even more special.

This session wasn’t just about creating beautiful senior photos. It was about adventure, spontaneity, and making the most of every moment. And now, I’m excited to say this barn location is officially part of my list for future western-style senior photo sessions in New Mexico.
